Words of praise for new Riverview DOC
'She has been such a breath of fresh air for us here,' says Lori WallaceMay 23, 2012
That at such a young age a person can be so knowledgeable, professional, fun and dedicated to the care of elders. This is what comes to mind when Riverview Manor RAI co-ordinator Lori Wallace is asked what amazes her about the home’s new director of care (DOC) Kaitlyn Cavanagh.
Wallace says couldn't be happier with the cohesion she's witnessed at the Peterborough long-term care home since Cavanagh joined the team in mid-March.
"I think it's just her professionalism," Wallace says, adding Cavanagh brings to the position professionalism and a keen understanding of the various roles of everyone on the team.
"She takes things by the horn and she's the first one to be out on the floor.
"She knows what it's like to be a person on the floor and she has no qualms about helping out like that . . . and she goes out of her way to put the residents first."
When she was studying to become a registered nurse, Cavanagh worked at Riverview Manor as a personal support worker (PSW) and as a temporary DOC once she was registered.
When a full-time DOC was hired, Cavanagh became manager of resident quality before moving on to the Peterborough Regional Health Centre's neonatal intensive care unit.
But long-term care, says Wallace, is Cavanagh's calling.
"It's like her niche." she says, and even after she left she was never far from the home, often stopping by to visit with coffees in hand for her friends and former colleagues.
When she heard the DOC position suddenly became available, she was at the home within 20 minutes, eager for a crack at the job.
Wallace says there was little need to deliberate among the leadership team when Cavanagh made her intentions known to apply for the position because she's such an excellent communicator who has extensive education and genuine compassion for the residents she serves.
She was hired practically on the spot and has transitioned smoothly into the position.
"She has been such a breath of fresh air for us here at Riverview," Wallace says.
