Maplewood celebrates moms with blockbuster event

'Very little went into it with really big payoffs'

Maplewood life enrichment co-ordinator Rachel Corkery says the Mother’s Day celebration hosted at the Brighton long-term care home this past weekend was a bigger-than-expected success, with more than 20 family members turning up to toast 32 moms.

To go along with the standard socialization and refreshments that come with Mother’s Day celebrations, Maplewood invited the Quinte Men’s Gospel Choir to the home to entertain everyone during the Sunday afternoon event and each resident mother was given a corsage.

“It was a really great afternoon and everyone had a lot of fun; it was a great way to celebrate our mothers,” Corkery tells the OMNIway, adding that the day’s social component was a huge part of the event’s success.

“After the music was done the choir stayed and they mingled with the residents and family members.”

Corkery and life enrichment aide Lynanne Campbell organized the event and the pair was kept busy serving residents and family members throughout the afternoon.

“We ran for two hours but it was definitely well worth it — very little went into it with really big payoffs,” Corkery says.

A big thank-you also goes out from Corkery to Earth Angel Designs in Campbellford. The florist provided the Maplewood ladies with corsages at a special rate for seniors. The residents appreciated the corsages and the florist’s generosity made a difference, says Corkery.

A day after the event, Corkery says residents are still talking about how much they enjoyed it.

“It’s all the talk in the dining room today,” she says.
